ANDREW W.K. Says New Album Will Be '10 Times More Exciting' Than 'I Get Wet'
June 6, 2003ANDREW W.K., whose debut album, "I Get Wet", was released last year to simultaneously glowing and scathing reviews, is enthusiastic as hell when it comes to talking about his new album.
"I really want us to be 10 times more exciting than the last record and a hundred times more fun," he told Canada's Chart Attack. "And the last one was really, really exciting and really fun, so it's a hard thing to do, but I think we're gonna pull it off."
So far, it looks as though ANDREW W.K. is recording 10 to 25 tracks, but Andrew points out that he's spending far more time on the intricate details for his new album.
"The last album, you know, we spent maybe about a week on drums and all that stuff," he said. "We're trying to zoom in more. And I spent two weeks on just the cymbals. On that fine-tuning — we're doing it one cymbal at a time. It's kinda weird and it might be kinda stupid… It results in a more painstaking process."
One thing ANDREW W.K. insists on is that no matter what your opinion of his albums, you should approach his music — and everyone else's — with an open mind and not restrain yourself to preconceptions.
"I don't think anybody's opinion about what this [music] is, why they like it or what it is about it they don't like — it's up to you," he said. "And I'm not gonna say you're wrong, I'm just gonna say how I think about it... You can say, 'You know what, I'm just gonna let this control me for five seconds. I'm gonna let go of the steering wheel and I'm not gonna figure it out and put it in my pocket and have it all wrapped up.' I'm gonna say, 'You know, what, I don't know exactly what this is, but I like it, it's fine. I'm gonna leave it at that.'
"And let the world be a mystery again, let the world have possibility and capability. Even though we have all this technology and all this information and all this ability to condense the world down to the size of a pea, it can still be completely mindblowing, if you let it."
Among the songs reportedly recorded for the forthcoming album are "Violent Life", "Never Ending Party", "Close Calls With Brick Walls", "Kicks and Bricks", "Addicted to Life", and "I Am Totally Stupid".
In addition to the upcoming CD, ANDREW W.K. has plans to release a new DVD at the end of 2003 or in early 2004.
